Preview Night 2020 arrangements

After a discussion with all 3rd year students in Fashion and Textiles we decided that we were not happy with the date of the preview night for the College and University. It is currently scheduled for a Thursday evening, which means more people will not be able to attend and a lot of family will not be present. Me and student Cady decided to discuss this with Nils Franke to change. After some emails, he did not respond and we got a reply from Mick Stubbs declining our offer. From this I have no contacted the tutors who are involved with this over the rest of the college to get feedback on the opinions of other students. This will give us a bigger indicator if it is worth changing to a Friday. I have got several replies, and will be going over to each department in the new year to further discuss the issue and collect numbers for who would want it changed.

Action Plan and Schedule

Going forwards from my feedback I have written an action plan of what I want to achieve over Christmas and into the New Year

  • More research into streetwear for inspiration on trimmings
  • Develop final designs more- consider scale, shapes, trimmings and whether you want it full jumpsuits or to incorporate two pieces in.
  • Illustrator and portfolio
  • Historical research for print and garments
  • More designer research into sketchbook
  • Visit London to purchase trimmings
  • Develop prints further, scale, colour, drawings
  • Research into Pam Hogg and the seam placement on her jumpsuits
  • Research into facts and figures for print designs based on climate change and natural disasters
  • Link print ideas more to the garment ideas
  • Clarify who my collection is for
  • Experiment more with muscle quilting and embroidery inspired by muscles, nerves and the brain
  • Develop prints through the use of flock/foil /vinyl

1st half of Semester 1 Reflection

Looking back over the first half of this semester I can say that I am very happy with how it has gone. I feel I have kept on-top of all work I set myself, and that I carried it out to a high standard. I have been self disciplined and organised which has helped me smoothly develop my project. I had a slightly difficult start but I overcame the few issues I had and worked hard to present a successful tabletop exhibition. The feedback I received was so helpful in knowing where to continue developing my project and how to improve my work further. I will be making an action plan for Christmas to ensure that I complete all the work needed ready to start back in January.

Table Top exhibiton feedback

Overall, I feel the feedback I got from students, tutors and industry people was brilliant. I have so much to work on over the break and so many directions I could develop my project to. I have a schedule for the rest of term to make the most of my time and develop my project in the way I feel is best.

VAL

-use illustrator to design as drawing development illustrations aren’t very strong

-Print ideas- neon flock/foil/vinyl, letters and numbers on prints inspired by facts and figures on each disaster

-prints scale

-pam hogg- 1980s- jumpsuits in stretch fabrics for performance/ celebrities, the way she seqms things is interesting research

– think about collection of other garments for 2nd semester, coats etc

-possible change in brief for 2nd semester

Look at vinyl book- cut out shapes by hand or on computer- compare

-fly net panels on stretch jumpsuits

-more trials on cover stich machine

-find great zips, appropriate for stretch fabric more subtle

CARLIE

-look more at streetwear for inspiration- maybe just small details of it

–  could incorporate print into garments more and think about finishing touches, trimmings fastenings

STUDENTS

-link prints to garments- water, loose textural free prints

-incorporate drawing alongside photo developed print the climbing wall/spots would be good against prints

-experiment with scale

-geos with textural prints would look good too

-look at colour pallet again- may need a warmer dark colour in

-possible historical influences- past weather storms and the effects on people- cause fear, who first climbed mount Everest/ how people survived extreme weather conditions back in the day

-scale in terms of garments, bigger hoods?

-more geometric shapes in silhouette of garments

– clarify if its non-gender

-more muscle embroidery

-more rope use- works well

-could print on lining/facings

-more thought out use of trimmings, possible trip to new trimmings in London

-make links to fear more obvious and thoughtful

-marbling inks for print development?

-be clearer of designers that I’m using to inspire my collection- show through sketchbook

-could look more at the brain for print/embroidery/garments, tells you when your fearful so look into emotions and reactions and display in garments/prints

-analyse imagery

-historical research

-look at other ski wear clothing, separates?

Chloe Pumfrett- Table top presentation

Chloe Pumfrett an ex student who is currently doing her PGSE at UCC gave a presentation to us about our upcoming table top exhibition. She gave us some really useful tips on how to plan for it, and what kind of things we will need to put it up. I am very happy with the design I came up with which is pictured below. For the screen I will be hanging a toile and the sail of each side, and having one toile on a mannequin. I will then be presenting a journey of my work so far on the screen. On the table I will then have my sketchbook and files, as well as fabric samples, and my design boards for the two tiles I have made. I am happy that this will work, and look forward to putting it up Wednesday next week.

Chloe also got us to analyse a previous students exhibition layout which again was very helpful when deciding what we wanted for ours.

She also gave us a checklist so we knew what to put out for the exhibition.

Follow up to Mentor Talk

Reflecting on my talk with Abbie I decided to send her another email just to thank her for coming in and to send her my pre collection brief as she wanted to read through it. She got back to me really quickly again, and I look forwards to keeping into contact with her this year. She gave me some tips to improve my CV and an image of some notes she wrote on there. I will be completing the changes ready to send it back for more feedback.
